Data - Record - Table - Database Empty Data - Record - Table - Database

Post  Dr. M EL Zayat on Tue Oct 19, 2010 12:44 pm

Dear learners,
In our first lecture, we discussed the various levels of data from the simplest to the most sophisticated level
I want each one of you to participate in giving us a case that applies the several levels of data.
For example:
- Data could be a name or number Mohamed Age 30
- Record could be a group of data elements related to each other Name - Age - Address...etc
- Table could be a group of records that are joint in a common feature such as your group for example. The table that contains your names is the table of all the Diploma students.
-Database is tables that are joint is a common feature such as the university student database

In this Exercise I need each one of you to give me a similar example that applies this leveling and classification technique.
Apply the classification to your workplace (School, Institution, Factory....etc)

Remember, I always expect the Best from You
Dr. Mohamed EL Zayat

An excellent Example can be The MIS project in the Egyptian public University.
Data
Can be the name of a student, faculty staff or year of entry and so on. It can be as below:
1st name
family Name
Code Number
....etc

Record
Could be a group of data elements related to a student or a faculty staff:
Students Name: Ahmed Hassan Khalil
Faculty: faculty of Arts
Grade year: 3rd Year
Department: History
...etc

Table
The table could include all the records for the students in the faculty of Arts - History department.
The table will include all year Grades (1st Year - 2nd Year - ...etc)

Database
Students' database will include a table for each department.
Faculty Staff' database will include a table for staff in each department.
Postgraduate students' database will include a table of PG (Post graduate) students in each department.

Data Warehouse
Reference to the above explanation we will have 3 Databases for each Faculty.
If we move to the University Level we will have many faculties. We will have a big Database for each faculty integrated in one big database for the University. It can also reach more than that. A Big database for all Higher education students, staff and PGs in Egypt.

Data Mining
If we move to the data mining level, we can now extract data as follows:
* All 1st year in a certain University.
* All 1st year in a certain faculty in the different Universities.
* All faculty staff that are under 50 years of age in the Egyptian Universities
..etc

Excellent Presentation from Mr. Moustafa Abou Ali
He succeeded in presenting the information in a classified way that allows differentiating between concepts.
He also added two new concepts we did not talk about in class which are Data Warehouse and Data Mining.
All of you should read about these concepts as it represent an important elements of database management.
Very Happy
Thanks
